There Should Be No Restrictions on the Reading of Books
Abstract: During the Great Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), almost all books were banned except the ultra-revolutionary propaganda pamphlets. After the downfall of the ultra-leftist “Gang of Four,” books are liberated, and people rush to bookstores to buy classics such as popular Chinese novels, Anna Karenina, and Les Miserables. But the restrictions on the reading of books have not been completed lifted. People are still fearful and think under the shadow of the ultra-leftist policy of the “Gang of Four.” Thus, we must clarify a fundamental issue: Do people have the freedom to read books? We do not have any laws restricting the freedom to read books. On the contrary, our constitution states that people have the freedoms of expression, publication, and pursuing cultural activities. Reading books is a cultural activity. Therefore, the conclusion is clear: As far as the reading of books is concerned, there should be no restrictions or forbidden areas.
